Bok Choy Book Review

20/05/20, Book Review, Bok Choy

I.A.L.T create a review/write about the text I am reading

Today is the last day we will be reading 'Bok Choy', and for the writing task we have to write a review about the story and upload our Storyboards and our summary of the book.

Below is my storyboard:

Below is the summary I made:

Bok Choy - Written By Paul Manson

This story is set near a Chinese village in New Zealand. The main characters in the story are Ah Sum, Jacob, Jacob’s Mother, Mrs Bishop and William. In the beginning of the story, Jacob is helping his mother stack firewood when Ah Sum comes to sell Bok Choy. Mrs Bishop, the grumpy neighbor of Jacob and his mother, comes out to see Ah Sum and Jacob’s mother. She mocks his Bok Choy by calling them ‘Chinese cabbage’. This makes Ah Sum realize they don’t like Bok Choy, so he walks away, continuing his journey around the village. When the mothers and Ah Sum had both left, nasty boy William teased Jacob, making fun of Ah Sum, calling him ‘Chinaman’. Jacob decided to go fishing, and made his way away. Suddenly the river tears him away from land, and turquoise waters turn a deep blue. He sees rocks and aims for them, but it was too late. He slammed into the rocks, and the next thing he knew, he was in a dark hut. He could see a hunched shape near a warm fire. It was Ah Sum. Ah Sum had seen him drowning on the way to his home, and waded in to save him. Ah Sum said that Jacob’s mother was coming, then offered him a bowl of rice. When Jacob said that he didn’t want any, Ah Sum ate and they both waited until Jacob’s mother came. Soon she arrived, and she thanked Ah Sum. She offered to give him money, but he declined problemless and smiled. Mother smiled thankfully back.

On the way home, Mrs Bishop came up to them. “I hope you're not cooking that FOUL  cabbage,” Mrs Bishop said. Jacob’s mother stood up for Ah Sum by correcting her racist remark. “It's called Bok Choy”

I sort of enjoyed this book because it had a good story. My favourite part of it is when Jacob's mother corrected Mrs Bishop because I didn't like her. She is annoying.

Maybe the author could improve the text by giving 'Mother' a name. In my letter speaking for Ah Sum, I called her Ms Susan because her name wasn't shown in the text. -_-

Have you read this book before? What do you think the author could have wrote to improve?

    1. Hi Manaia
Thanks...My least favourite part of it was the bit where Jacob and Ah Sum waited for 'Mother'. It was boring.
