Comprehension Questions

1. What percentage of water on Earth is made up of oceans?
71% of water on Earth is made up of oceans.

2. Why are sea levels rising?
Sea levels are rising because of global warming.

3. Are rising sea levels getting better or worse? How do you know that?
I don’t think rising sea levels aren’t getting better. If anything, worse. I know that because it is in the book, Rising Seas.

4. What are the effects of rising sea levels?
Sea water is getting to places where it never used to reach. This can cause problems for roads, houses, and crops. Another effect is that cyclones are now happening more often.

5. In what year did the Port of Auckland see it’s highest sea level? What was the sea level at?
The Port of Auckland’s highest sea level was in 2000, and it was at 20cm.

6. How did rainfall effect Australia?
Rain that normally fell into the oceans fell onto Australia, causing big floods that soaked into Australia’s dry grounds instead of slowly sliding back into the ocean. The water gradually evaporated over time. Australia’s pattern went back to the more usual way, and rain fell into the ocean again.

7. Without researching, how do you think we could help prevent sea levels from rising?
We could help prevent global warming to help prevent rising seas. U-U

    I like how you've gathered some information about rising sea levels around the world. Have you noticed anything different where you live, like whether or not the tide is coming higher onto the beach.

      Thank you, and no, I don't go to the beach very often and when I do I don't really look for little details like the sea levels rising. Bye!
